These ceremonies date back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries where they wore robes that were inspired by the clergy regalia (robes) because back then education was closely tied to religious institutions

Types of Graduation Ceremonies

Elementary and Middle School: These ceremonies commemorate our younger children to some of their very first milestones. They are encouraged, and this is where their confidence starts to build, and they are having fun making accomplishments they can appreciate.

High School: This ceremony really means a lot to those graduating High school. This signifies your rite of passage to adulthood, your independence and your future. This one is the milestone your parents have worked and strived for you. They have given you all the support to help you get to this point.

Here is my granddaughter Jamani a graduating senior walking across the stage to receive her diploma from Nova High School. It was a glorious and exciting day for her and our whole family. You could just feel the pride it that auditorium:

College. University and Trade School: This ceremony is your accomplishment to earning a degree in the field of study that you have personally chosen and you have made it the critical milestone. You are now ready to start achieving your goals on your own. This is where your parents and family get to sit back and marvel at your life milestones.

Graduation Traditions

Celebrations

Caps and Gowns: Robes or gowns with caps and tassels flipped to the left symbolizes unity and scholarly achievement and represent the official moment of graduation. Students like decorating their graduation caps, taking photos and attending graduation parties.

Diplomas and Certificates: This is a physical symbol of what you have worked so hard to achieve, this is your formal proof. Something you can place on your mantle for years to come. Or leave our diplomas with our parents so that they may display them at their homes.

Speeches and Commencement Addresses: The ceremony is the centerpiece of the event with speeches and commencement addresses that provide inspiration, reflection, and encouragement for the next chapter of life.

Plan a Meaningful Celebration

Choose Your Type of Celebration: Decide whether you will have a backyard party. Or if you want something a bit bigger perhaps in the Community halls with a Formal ceremonies or you could have a virtual celebration

Create a Theme: In our current climate it has become a standard practice to have a theme for the celebration. One idea could be everyone come dressed in your schools colors. Or what your career aspirations are or what what future goals maybe.

Announcements and Invitations: These can be printed or you can also do it digital (save yourself a few dollars). Make sure to include the graduate’s name with the date and time of the ceremony along with your location for the ceremony or if you are do this digitally make sure to include the streaming link.

Activities, Popular Food and Decor: Some of the things we incorporated in our celebration was a photo board with highlights from elementary to high school. You can also try memory jars like we did back when I was in school which was a long, long time ago. Try custom cakes with the persons picture on it and don’t forget about speeches and toast.

Grad Gifts That Make a Difference

The party is not complete without the perfect gift. I like giving practical gifts ones that they can use. Money, gift cards, computers or depending on the field they will be going into perhaps some professional clothes in that filed. Another gift idea could be that photo album where you have collected all of their major milestones or a handwritten letter with your deepest sentiments.

This special day holds different meanings for everyone. However it is recognized as a time of great accomplishment and should be celebrated. Preparing for the graduation is as important as the the actually planning.

Start to plan early, so that everything runs smoothly and on time. Use a count down calendar if you must. This calendar helps you keep track of your important deadlines, making sure that you are fully prepared for the days events.

In conclusion ending one chapter and starting a new one is a starting point for our children. The ceremony with family and friends builds confidence, opens doors to opportunities, and reinforces the value of education and perseverance.
