The Origin of Fast Food & Why People Are Obsessed

I am not a big fan of fast food, for me it is a last resort however I have wondered about the origin of fast foods and why people are obsessed with it especially our kids.

Fast food that was not a term that I can not recall using when I was a kid. Man if we had a hamburger and fries somewhere other than home it was a big production. Now Fast Food is an industry and a big industry at that. We see it everywhere around the world. You can get almost anything quick like pizza, burgers and crispy fries, fried chicken, tacos, coffee drinks all courtesy of the Fast Food industry. Now since COVID you can get it delivered to your door quick fast and in a hurry at almost anytime you want.

So since fast food was not a thing when I was growing I was curious as to where did fast food start? Where did it come from and why; more importantly why are people obsessed with fast food? And I wanted to concern myself with the healthiest and the worst ingredients that are inside of all those fast food meals that are consumed by millions of us everday. I have to include myself because sometimes my days runs a little crazy and I really need something fast.

After we explore the history then we will take a dive into the top ten fast food chains. I also think that we should check out the psychology behind fast food addiction. And then we will look at the ingredients being used to create this global fast food industry.

Origin of fast food

I found out that the fast food industry started in the United States in the early nineteen hundred’s, but the actual concept began during ancient civilizations where they sold ready to eat meals to travelers and busy worker before there were any drive throughs or uber eat deliveries to your front door.

I was trying to think how far back I could remember first going inside a White Castle fast food joint, I can’t remember i just remember they were samll with nothing but onions and cheese if you wanted cheese. Personally I did not like thier burger. But to my surprise the White Castle restaurant is often considered the world’s first fast food hamburger chain, founded in 1921 by Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson in Kansas.

The White Castle restaurant chain introduced the world to affordable burgers, prepared as an assembly line, using standarized food preparation, while you could look into the kitchen and see you food being prepared with fast service.

Affordable burgers: leading to high profit margins the production cost is kept low through bulk ingredient purchases, steady revenue during economic downturns which makes it a reliable stream of cash

Assembly line cooking: allows for a smaller number of workers that handle high volumes of transactions keeping labor cost down while increasing productivity in the number of orders that can be filled per hour. This helps to reduce employee training time making them ready faster and easier.

Clean kitchen visibility: helps to hold staff accountability to follow safety protocol, and keep work areas clean. It also provide a piece of mind for the customer serving as trust and transparency. Which is a great marketing advantage resulting in repeat business thus creating positive social media reviews

Fast service: this is the ultimate customer satisfaction, showing your customer you value there time, it give the business a competitive edge while increasing revenue during those busy hours attracting more customer noticing the business turn time during the busiest time of the day

Standardized food preparation: provide nutritional accuracy for health conscious individuals, it also helps to reduce food waste and cooking errors, ensuring that every meal produced is of the same quality, texture and taste.

Convenience and Busy Lifestyles

We are living in a right now culture. Make it affordable and convenient. Convenience is the a major factor in our preferences and lifestyle choices. Fast foods fit right in to our daily life considering the the amount of hours we work, managing multiple responsibilities, picking up and dropping off the kids to their respective functions and not to mention the daily commute to work.

Fast food solves a lot of these issues for our busy lifestyles:

  • Affordable pricing: with all of the price increases we have been experiencing this is very important
  • Ease of ordering: most fast food places thrive to make sure that you are able to place your order with ease and less confusion
  • Fast preparation: fast food restaurants for the most part batch prep food with the use of industrial equipment, utilizing par cooked ingredients, heated holding cabinets to assemble orders in a matter of seconds.
  • No cooking: means no more skipping essential meals entirely, and now you have more time with family
  • No cleanup: this is where fast food shines for our busy schedules

You tell me, Do you think Fast Food Is Planned In A Way To Make You Obessed with It?

I think so, absolutely, it is scientifically engineered to create food rewards that floods your brain with dopamine. And yall know dopamine gives us that feel good feeling, one that we want to experience more than once. It ‘s kind like the saying or slogan that Lays has about their potato chip, “You can eat Just One”. Creating a feel good chemical that is responsible for addiction. It is designed to hijack your brain by designing it with the exact ratio combination of fat, salt and sugar. You are very familiar with them too, they use added sugars. artificial flavor enhancers, crispy textures, high sodium levels, melted cheese combinations and saturated fats to trigger our cravings.

And when we consume fast food our brain releases dopamine surges projecting pleasure and a sense of reward. So now you crave it, you want it and with anything else over time you become desensitized and you start to eat more and more to achieve that same level of satisfaction. The exact combinations of fast food ingredients targets your brain’s reward centers without triggering that full sensation, causing you to overeat.
