My cousin is very much into cryptocurrency and he was trying to explain it to me so that I could start trading. What he was saying to me felt like he was speaking a foreign language. So I set out to do my own research. Here are a few things that I found that helped me, whether you’re brand new to crypto or just starting your research, this page breaks everything down in simple terms.

What Is Cryptocurrency?

cryptocurrency

First of all Cryptocurrency is digital money that runs on blockchain technology, unlike our traditional money which is controlled by the government, Cryptocurrency is decentralized, which means that it is not controlled by banks or governments.

Right now there being thousands of cryptocurrencies available it can become overwhelming deciding which ones have value and most importantly how they work. The five cryptocurrencies that I have listed are the most traded coins right now. Dig deeper to find out if one or all of them are right for you.

As you may know the Trump administration and Congress are putting into place the required market infrastructure and regulations to take cryptocurrency to all. There were multiple crypto with record highs in 2025, so I wanted to be informed and poised to make my entry into the crypto world.

So this has sparked my interest and that is why I decided to research to see which ones are worth looking at and should I add them to my portfolio. What are they and what makes them gain value? As you read through these pages keep in mind that this content is for educational purposes only and does not provide financial advice. So lets dive in and see how they work and why the big interest:

Reasons People Are Interested in Cryptocurrency

  • Faster digital payments
  • Global access
  • Investment and trading opportunities
  • Lower transaction fees

First Cryptocurrency Bitcoin (BTC)

What Is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin was the first crypto created in 2009 to allow peer to peer payments without a bank or middleman. This is one of its core value propositions. Bitcoin operates by using blockchain technology that holds public records of your digital transactions that are held and maintained by thousands of individual computers worldwide.

bitcoin

Currently Bitcoin is by far the most valuable and widely held crypto asset and with it’s creation it started the decentralized finance (DeFi) movement which includes Wall Street.

Beginners Learn Bitcoin First because of the following reasons:

  • Limited supply (21 million coins) this is by design
  • Most recognized cryptocurrency
  • Often called “digital gold”

This is how You Start Trading Bitcoin:

  • Create an account on a trusted crypto exchange
  • Buy small amounts to learn price movement
  • Store safely in a secure wallet

Bitcoin could fit into my portfolio, because it is perceived that its supply is finite. It was created that way by design, creating only 21 million bitcoins or mined coins. This is why Bitcoin has been dubbed “digital gold”, because for many investors Bitcoin is a reliable way to store value. It hedges against inflation that is caused by debasement of the fiat currencies by expanding the money supply. In other words, it is a risk management strategy, a lot like an insurance policy.

Your insurance policy does not eliminate your risk entirely, it does limit your potential losses during the times when the market is volatile, reducing potential gains during the fluctuation. Bitcoin works into pretty much the same manner.

Currently we see Wall Street investing billions of dollars in Bitcoin and other crypto, so with that being said, we may see future administrations will be more likely to be pro crypto as much as the Trump administration. But you never know for sure they could be like the Biden administration, which showed very little support .

Blockchain Ethereum (ETH)

What Is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a blockchain that records everything. A huge ledger, if you will that everyone can see. It was launched in 2015 that lends support to smart contracts programs that run automatically. Which means you can send and receive directly.

Ethereum

Ethereum is also called “Ether” and it is the brain child of Vitalik Buterin a Canadian with a team of developers. Ethereum is a kind of massive, decentralized app store. Buterin expanded on bitcoin’s blockchain, which allowed for more complex computing operations that enable smart contracts and decentralized in finance.

Just like Bitcoin is dubbed the “digital gold”, Ether is dubbed the “digital oil”, because it keeps the apps running on the blockchain. They have mechanisms in place to make sure that supply and the currency’s values are supported. Ether is constantly being created to pay the people who keep the network running and it is constantly being destroyed to keep the supply steady and help prevent its value from being diluted.

Like the Bitcoin, Ethereum does not actually generate a profit. For its developers and investors, Ethereum will become and remain the dominant infrastructure for a growing blockchain-based applications. Hoping this will fuel the demand for the currency and driving up its value.

In the past Ethereum has faced scalability issues with it’s value being supported by a vision of long term success as indispensable fuel of a growing blockchain economy, hence new blockchains like Solana which is a competitor of Ether.

Ethereum switched to proof of stake from proof of work for more friendly and more security. Which allows user to validate their transaction information is accurate, thereby reducing energy consumption.

Ethereum Is Important because:

  • Powers decentralized apps (dApps)
  • Strong developer ecosystem
  • Used for NFTs (Non-Fungible Token) unique cryptographic tokens and DeFi platforms

Start Trading Ethereum:

  • Buy ETH (Ethereum) through an exchange
  • Use it to learn about decentralized apps
  • Monitor gas fees before transactions

Global Payments XRP (Ripple)

What Is XRP?

XRP is a blockchain ledger that went live in 2012 by a company called Ripple Labs. It was designed to revolutionize how the banks and other financial institutions handle international transfers, serving as the bridge currency for them. So rather than converting US dollars directly to another currency, the bank could convert dollars into XRP and XRP would convert to the appropriate currency. XRP does it faster without fees and exchange rate fluctuation.

XRP

They created 100 billion XRP coins when the blockchain first launched, over half were placed into escrow, with no other mining of the coins. They would release 1 billion coins to the network operators each month and any unused supply is returned to escrow. As of August 2025 60 billion XRP coins were in circulation. Most investors are hoping that the ledger will be the standard for payments.

XRP Stands Out because:

  • Low transaction fees
  • Transactions are very fast
  • Used for global payments

How Beginners Trade XRP

  • Check exchange availability (varies by region)
  • Learn about price volatility
  • Use limit orders for better control

This diagram shows how payments are processed on the Ripple Newtwork:

XRP Ripple Network settles in seconds not days. They operate twenty four seven, that means they operate outside of regular business hours and fees are lower.

High-Speed Blockchain for Web3 Solana (SOL):

What Is Solana?

Solana is a blockchain that is known for it’s speed and low transaction costs. And it is popular because of Web3 apps or dApps, decentralized apps; that are designed to prioritize user ownership, data control, privacy, transparency, and utilizing smart contracts to remove intermediaries. Along with NFTs (Non-Fungible Token) unique cryptographic tokens.

Solana

Solana blockchain was created by Anatoly Yakovenko and a team of engineers that launched in 2020. And according to Solana disclosures it is giving Ethereum a challenge with around five times as many daily active addresses, the transactions and user fees are paid with the Solana coin.

With Larry Fink from BlackRock calling Solana the “next generation” of markets and one of the leading platforms for asset tokenization, they have positioned themselves as a leader. They are faster and cheaper due to their breakthrough technology, precise records of transactions and proof of history.

Unlike Ether, Solana isn’t fixed the coins are create and burned, depending on the level of activity. They are expecting to reach 1.5 percent annually at a steady pace. The coin could possibly gain strength as usage and the demand grows. However questions regarding the volatility remains. There are also questions regarding reliability and competition from others entering the market.

Beginners Explore Solana:

  • Very fast transaction processing
  • Low fees compared to Ethereum
  • Growing ecosystem

Beginners Trade Solana:

  • Start with small trades
  • Learn about network activity
  • Watch for ecosystem updates

Safety & Stability USDC

What Is USDC?

USDC was launched in 2018 as a collaboration between Circle, a global technology firm and Coinbase, a US crypto exchange which actually operates across multiple blockchain’s like Solana and Ethereum. Users can take advantage of different blockchain features while maintaining a stable peg to the dollar.

USDC crypto is known as a “stablecoin” that was designed to bridge crypto and the US dollar and other fiat currencies as a cash proxy which are pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. In addition they do not have to re-enter the bank system every time they sell a cryptocurrency.

USDC can be used to purchase goods and services on blockchains and have the ability global transactions. This makes them very popular amongst investors. USDC coins is an asset that is another “digital oil” that provides liquidity in the digital ecosystem.
