Avocados and Eggs: My #1 Powerful Combo

Avocados and Eggs, now that would be something that I would tell my Mother no to in a heartbeat. Growing up I did not eat or consume anything that was green in color including candy. I don’t think as a kid I was even familiar with avocados.

Now I liked eggs but they had to be scrambled soft with some grits and toast. For me there was no other way to eat them. I grew up with my Mother constantly saying to me, Pat you’ve got to eat. I can recall times when she would just plead with me to eat, to eat something she really did not care what.

avocados and eggs

As I have grown and had a daughter of my own I understand where my Mother was coming from. After getting older and understanding my body I still have trouble eating the right things to keep myself healthy. When I was diagnosed as borderline diabetic I perked up and started to try things that I never tried before.

I started eating overnight oatmeal which I will get into in another article. Then my daughter suggested avocados, telling me that they were delicious and could help me in trying to control some of my health issues. She had gotten the idea from her colleagues at work. The first time I tried them it was like eating green paste, it was horrible.

I didn’t want to be diabetic so I kept trying to find ways that I could eat them. So I tried the avocado toast from Dunkin Donuts but it was entirely too salty for me.

I had to make some changes if I wanted to improve my health so I tried them with runny eggs with a little salt and pepper. It was tolerable so I continued with the combo for awhile until I perfected it the way I love it. So much so that I started to eat it almost every day because I found that it was filling for me and it made me feel better inside. I could not explain it I just know I liked it a lot.

I started to do some research to find out how they affected my body and mind. To my surprise I was happy that I did because I found out a lot of helpful information. First I had to keep in mind was that everything in moderation, not each and everyday for almost every meal that I consumed.

I was surprised that they are often called a superfood. We all love superfoods for their health benefits. As a superfood they are packed with healthy fats that are great for my body. They are called monounsaturated fats, like those found in olive oil. Check out some of the benefits:

Avocado
  • Helps balance my cholesterol
  • Keeps me full longer
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Support Heart health

This matters to me because the fat slows down my digestion, so I do not crash and get hungry in an hour later. They contain folate or vitamin B9 which is an essential nutrient crucial for my DNA synthesis, cell division, and red blood cell formation. It also contains magnesium, potassium and vitamin B6. I have learned that these nutrients help regulate my dopamine and serotonin levels while helping to regulate my stress , mental clarity and focus. Not sure about you, in this day and climate I definitely need to regulate my stress levels.

I get a calm and very satisfying feeling after I eat a half of one. My doctor told me that they help to improve my nutrient absorption, meaning that they get into my system faster because they help my body absorb fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. When I add them with my eggs the absorption rate is skyrocketed to new levels that only help my body. That’s very exciting!

Remember I mentioned earlier everything in moderation, well that also applies here. They are considered a superfood and healthy however they are very high in calories. So be aware of your consumption, I usually have only a half of one at any given time. They can cause bloating for some people and they can be expensive.

My three grandsons consume a lot of eggs in our house. If you checked out the refrigerator you will find at least 18 of them in the frig at any given time. They are very high in protein. And since my oldest grandson likes to stay fortified when he plays basketball, he eats his fair share. My youngest grandson got me hooked on eating my eggs sunny side up. He likes to eat just the egg by itself. And my second oldest grandson likes his eggs scrambled. Because he is going to definitely eat and egg sandwich.

Eggs

Eggs contain nine amino acids, they are the most nutrient dense foods out there. They provide my boys with a complete protein source that support their:

  • Hormone production
  • Immune health system
  • Muscle repair

When you consume two eggs you get about 12 grams of high quality protein. When you cook them sunny side up you are preserving more nutrients. This helps to preserve vitamin D, omega 3’s and choline. You can fine more omega 3s in pastured raised eggs. Choline is critical for brain development, your liver health and your memory.

Try eggs to help balance your blood sugar, it can help in preventing cravings, reduce insulin spikes and help stabilize your energy.

People with high cholesterol will want to be cognizant of eggs, so as to not raise your cholesterol levels. I like to buy pasture raised or eggs high in omega 3s. Poor quality eggs could contain inflammatory fats and I am sure you will want to stay away from that.

Because I have a love hate relationship with food, Avocado and eggs gives me reason to embrace what the two of them do for my body. When I really like a certain food I tend to stick with it. I don’t know if it is mind over matter but as I said before, they make me feel better along with my Velovita supplements that I take. Uuth, Bran, AM/PM Essentials and Reserve.

When I eat them I find that my appetite is controlled more. The fat from the avocado and the protein from the egg keeps my insulin levels stable and my body release leptin for my hormones. The fats and cholesterol are raw materials that support my hormones naturally. I find that to be the case as an active individual over 30 plus years. I also feel it helps me with stress, helping to keep it at a minimum.

Eating it helps me with:

  • steady energy
  • no blood sugar spikes
  • easy to digest

I eat them sometimes for breakfast mostly because it boost my mental focus when I am working on writing pages for my PBS Performance Blogging System. During the morning hours well until after lunch no cravings. When I have it for lunch it keeps my energy steady and I don’t have any afternoon crashes. If I have it for dinner it’s not heavy on my stomach and it does not interfere with my sleep.

Just keep in mind if you are sensitive to dietary fats, have gallbladder problems or on a strict low calorie diet adjust your portions. Remember moderation, portion control is key.

No one knows your body like you do so make sure that you listen to it. What is good for me might not necessarily be good for you. LISTEN. I love avocado and sunny side up eggs because of how they make me feel.

My prayer is that this article helps as many as possible and give you some insight on the benefits of avocados and eggs. Happy Eating!!!
